THE BRIEF
Since the first moment the client – General Projects – approached this project with one goal in mind: to bring new life into this building in a sustainable way that wouldn’t compromise a bold aesthetic approach. It shouldn’t just be an efficient design. It shouldn’t just be about delivering area and appealing amenities.
All this needed to go hand in hand with a low carbon emissions construction and with innovative ways to deliver the beauty a building in a design lead area like Clerkenwell demands.
THE PROPOSAL
The best approach architects can take in a brief like this is to retain as much of the existing structure as possible. That was our starting point: preserve the building, improve it, and enhance its inherent aesthetic values.
Everything we added was in dialogue with this principle. From the timber structure that follows the existing proportions, to the corner building that reflects the public character of what once stood there or the reception design, which resulted from a collaboration between architects and artists celebrating the spirit that makes Clerkenwell great.
